Babies are fragile and they need to be hold properly, providing lots of support to head and neck. Baby’s neck muscles take about one month to grow stronger, in order to let her hold the head on her own. Milestones are achieved at baby’s own pace, but we can help baby achieve them fast, by practicing certain techniques. Wait, till your baby starts to have some wakeful sessions during the day. Then, try to use her active time before feed, to play with her. Put the baby on her stomach on a play-mat (strictly only under your supervision). Some babies will be very happy to explore this new activity, but others may feel uncomfortable and start crying at first. Don’t force the baby to lay in this position for long time but keep trying for small sessions, according to her mood. Babies like to explore the world by their own eyes. So, they will try to lift their head when they have restricted access to the view, in tummy down position. An active baby should be able to lift her head for small duration, at the end of 1 month. A two month baby would master the act of lifting the head by 45 degrees. Tummy time aids the development of neck, chest and arm muscles eventually, and enables the baby to lift her head without help. Babies are able to take the weight of torso on their forearms by the end of 3 months. By six months, baby will have developed strong neck muscles, to be able to hold her head firm, and also get total control over turning it sideways.
Don’t worry if your baby is behind these milestones. This may be due to the fact, that you had given birth before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Premature babies reach their milestones late, but still catch up and spends the normal life later. Always consult the doctor if you are worried.
